The GLC-Class by Mercedes is already known as a trend setter in the SUV world, especially with its AMG-fettled GLC43 models. But the experts in Affalterbach are used to raising the bar even higher, and the result of their efforts is the introduction of GLC63 SUV and Coupe variants for the 2018 model year. These two high-performance SUVs source power from a hand-built 4.0L biturbo V8, that develops 469 horses and 479 lb-ft of torque. These are the first midsize SUVs by Mercedes to receive a powerful 8-cylinder twin-turbo engine and AMG treatment. There's also an even mightier GLC63 S Coupe version, that boasts 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. These engines are teamed with AMG's 9-speed automatic with paddle shifters that ensures fast response times and downshifts. Like the majority of AMG products, “63” models have Dynamic Select programs that adjust engine, drivetrain, steering, and suspension settings according to the driver's preferences.
The 2018 Mercedes GLC-Class lineup saw the addition of a plug-in hybrid model (GLC350e) that has a 21-mile electric range. It works as a conventional hybrid, with the electric motor aiding a 2.0L gasoline turbo engine. This tandem produces 275 horses and 413 lb-ft of torque, accelerating the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. This “green” SUV also has Mercedes’s legendary 4Matic all-wheel drive as a standard feature. Those who want even more high-tech powertrain can opt for a plug-in fuel cell variant of the GLC-Class that was shown in Frankfurt in 2017. According to the automaker, it is the first time these two sources of power, electricity and hydrogen, are combined in one vehicle. Named the GLC F-Cell, it uses a 197-hp electric motor teamed with a 13.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, plus two hydrogen tanks. The vehicle's hydrogen driving range is nearly 270 miles, while the EV mode gives almost 50 miles. When the Hybrid mode is on, the vehicle uses both electric and hydrogen power. The regular GLC300 was not given any substantial mechanical changes for 2018, powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger. The GLC43 models retain a 3.0L turbo V6. They again have performance-tweaked suspension and brake systems and ride on 20-inch wheels, while other models roll on 18s.
The styling isn't any different for the model year '18: the sleek exterior that this mean ute got after its debut as a 2016 year model (as a result of GLK-tag to GLC-tag conversion) still doesn't seem to need any touch-up. The new GLC63 got a menacing Panamericana grille, wide-body fenders, new side skirts and rear diffuser, and chrome-plated quad exhaust outlets. Inside, 2018 Mercedes GLC-Class AMG GLC63 accessories and parts are perfectly blended to create a clean, polished interior design, with racy elements like sport bucket seats upholstered in MB-Tex leather and an AMG Performance steering wheel.
