The Ford Explorer has always been praised for offering excellent performance, quiet and comfortable interior with three rows of seats, and a host of packages and options to choose from. With the new generation set to enter the market for the 2020 model year, this long-running SUV is going to be even better. Besides, the model now has a mechanical twin by Lincoln, the Aviator. The Explorer now employs the new rear-wheel drive modular platform named the CD6 instead of a former front-drive one. As usual, all-wheel drive is available optionally. In addition, the vehicle is lighter now thanks to an increased amount of aluminum in the chassis and heavier use of mixed materials. Although, the body of the 2020 Ford Explorer still features mostly steel panels. Besides, the new vehicle is wider and has a much longer hood and bigger dash-to-axle ratio.
The 2020 Ford Explorer utilizes an updated line of engines. The base variant remained the same – it is a 2.3 L turbo I4 capable of generating 280 hp. An optional 3.5 L V6 engine was replaced with a 3.3 L V6 also employed by the popular F-150 truck. Featuring a smaller swept volume, the new unit develops similar horsepower and higher torque. The new high-performance ST variant of the Explorer comes with a 3.0 L twin-turbo V6 rated at 400 hp under the hood. It’s the same unit used by the MKZ and Continental by Lincoln. Gasoline engines can be bolted to a 10-speed automatic transmission used by such Ford models as the Mustang and F-150. The new Explorer will also offer a hybrid powertrain. In particular, its special version named the Police Interceptor Utility is claimed to be fitted with an efficient hybrid system rated at 24 mpg combined, with the battery pack placed thoughtfully in order not to compromise interior comfort or cargo space. Its optional 3.0 L EcoBoost V6 makes it the fastest police vehicle, pushing it to 60 mph in 5.77 seconds and giving it a top speed of 150 mph. In its standard configuration, the Police Interceptor Utility comes with the 3.3 L V6. This cop SUV can also ford up to 18 inches of water and go over obstacles like railroad tracks without any problem. A Class III hitch is on the list of standard features, as are LED headlights, heavy-duty seating, and Bluetooth.
The exterior design of the 2020 Ford Explorer is an evolution over the preceding generation. The vehicle still has a big and blocky body and similar treatments for the greenhouse and lights. However, both front and rear ends received certain updates. The Explorer now comes with reworked headlights, new front bumper and new hood. The rear end features updated tail lights connected via a red bar mounted on the trunk lid. Besides, now there is a trailer hitch receiver integrated into the rear bumper and corresponding 7-pin plug. The newly-introduced ST variant comes with dual-exhaust outlets and split-spoke wheels to differentiate from regular models.
