In 1976 the power of the Merak was increased to 217 HP. The engine was remarkable for its compactness, allowing a five-speed gearbox to be mounted ahead of it. The Maserati Merak has a top speed of 152 mph and smooth handling. It is interesting to know that the Merak was named after a star from the Great Bear constellation.
